Meet Ian

Jazz trumpeter and private instructor .

Ian Livingston is a Jazz trumpeter and private instructor from Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

From a young age, Ian knew he wanted to play the trumpet for a living and in middle school started to find a love for jazz through the music of Lee Morgan. During his High School years, Ian performed with the National Jazz Workshop All-Star Big Band and was selected to be a member of the NAfME All-National Jazz Band.

After graduating from Jefferson High School, Ian moved to Philadelphia and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Performance from the University of the Arts. In Philadelphia, Ian was able to study with one of his jazz trumpet heroes, John Swana, along with other great Philadelphia musicians like Matt Gallagher and Tony Miceli.

After Philly, Ian attended William Paterson University (WPU) in Wayne, New Jersey, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies and Performance. At WPU Ian was able to learn from some of the best musicians in the world including Jeremy Pelt, Bill Charlap, Cecil Bridgewater, Bruce Barth, and Steve Nelson.

Ian loves small group jazz and improvisation, and is greatly influenced by Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Eldridge, and many others. He has played many gigs in WV, MD, PA, NJ and NYC, and has performed in prestigious venues like Chris’ Jazz Cafe and Dizzy’ Club.

Currently, Ian is living in Shepherdstown, West Virginia where he performs throughout the DMV area and teaches trumpet and improvisation lessons. He intends to move back to the NYC area in late 2025.
